Geelong’s Festival of Sails Returns This January

Geelong’s Festival of Sails Returns This January

After a two-year hiatus, Geelong’s much loved Festival of Sails (FOS) will be roaring back into life from Saturday 22 January to Wednesday 26 January 2022!

The historic event was first held in 1844 and has since consistently attracted the highest calibre of sailing craft and crew. It’s a fantastic family day out, usually attracting over 100,000 visitors every January to the Royal Geelong Yacht Club and along the Geelong waterfront.

The regatta is particularly famous for its Melbourne to Geelong Passage Race – the biggest and oldest keel boat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere – which kicks off the festival each year. 2022 will mark the 179th running of the iconic race, which is expected to attract up to 250 entries.

This year’s festivities will look a little different than usual, but there’ll still be plenty of shore-side entertainment for the whole family! Entertainment will include:

  • Free live music across two precincts
  • Great food and wine
  • Children’s entertainment
  • Free Discover Sailing experiences for the whole family
  • Food trucks and market stalls
  • Plenty of interactive activities!

Organisers are expecting a strong fleet to attend FOS in 2022, with entries already exceeding 100 vessels from across Victoria and New South Wales. And as state borders continue to open up, it’s hoped further entries will come from around Australia. With over 15 different races across the long weekend, there’s sure to be something for everyone, and spectators will certainly not be disappointed.

The 2022 Festival of Sails is proudly supported by Visit Victoria, the City of Greater Geelong and Geelong Connected Communities.
